About The Walk & RollThe Ohio State University Medical Center Service Board is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The mission of its 250 members is to enhance patient care excellence by providing the little things that can make all the difference for patients and their families. For 25 years, volunteers have raised more than $800,000 for those “little things.” Last year alone, 37 projects valued at more than $63,000 touched the lives of an estimated 159,000 patients and their families. This year, the Service Board is planning a new event called “Walk & Roll” that will raise funds to enhance the Therapy Garden at The Ohio State University Rehabilitation Services at Dodd Hall. Our event is an inclusive, accessible 5K Walk/Fun Walk for all ages around The Ohio State University campus. On Sunday, May 23, Tyson Gentry, our Grand Marshall will signal the “Start!” at 8:45 a.m. Tyson entered Ohio State as a freshman walk-on football player in the fall of 2004 as a punter. He had dreamed of playing football for the Buckeyes, just like his father, Bob, did in the early 1970s. In April 2006, Gentry moved to receiver for spring practice and suffered a broken vertebra in his neck that left him partially paralyzed. He was honorary captain for Ohio State’s Fiesta Bowl appearance against Texas in January 2009. He remained part of the football program after his injury, and he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2009. He is currently a graduate student in Speech Pathology, and he was the winner of the 2009 E. Gordon Gee Spirit of Ohio State Award given by the Alumni Association. Dodd Hall has ranked among the nation’s top 10 rehabilitation programs for nearly two decades. It is the only program in Ohio that has repeatedly earned the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) specialty certification for the care of patients with stroke, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury. The Therapy Garden utilizes plants and horticultural activities to enhance relaxation, physical activity, sense of productivity, and social interaction. The Garden provides an opportunity for improved mobility, balance, endurance, and memory skills. Where & When & How
